mobility aids are freedom

My mobility aids are freedom. They are safety and survival. They are my armor and my fashion statement. They make me feel powerful and independent. They give me the freedom to leave my house, to go out with my chosen family, to share my story with others. I’m Scarlet, a 24 year old non-binary person. I am Disabled and use multiple mobility aids to help me get around. I have found that decorating my mobility aids makes me feel more confident when I use them. Here is a photo shoot I did a while back!

Scarlet, a non-binary person, sits in their power wheelchair which has ivy on the arm rest. They have short brown hair and glasses. Scarlet is wearing a dress with a vest type top and a floral and checkered pattern skirt. They are smiling at the camera with their hands held up.

Scarlet, a non-binary person, sits in their power wheelchair with their right hand on the joystick. They have short brown hair and glasses. Scarlet is wearing a dress with a vest type top and a floral and checkered pattern skirt. They are looking up and away from the camera with a serious look on their face.

Scarlet’s leg and boot are shown along with their cane. Their boot is black and shiny and their leg has hair on it. You can also see the bottom of the checkered and floral skirt. The cane is black with silver carvings it in like mermaid scales and it has a sticker on it that says “This Machine Kills Ableists”.

Part of Scarlet’s power wheelchair is shown. We can see the joystick and the right armrest covered in ivy.

The other armrest is shown also covered in ivy. There is also stickers on the wheelchair of a butterfly and the mystery machine visible.

Scarlet is sitting in their wheelchair and only their right arm is fully visible. They are holding the wheelchair joystick and a tattoo on their arm that says “still” is visible. We can also see part of their dress and the ivy peeking out from under their arm.

A shadow of Scarlet in their power wheelchair. The shadow of the ivy on the armrests is also visible. We can also see the bottom of Scarlet’s skirt which is checkered and floral pattern.
